I got my first real email account my freshman year in college (I had an AOL account before that, which technically was an email account, but only later). Back then the unix email program PINE was state of the art and was the de-facto mail client at most universities. Growing up a Mac user I had never seen a command prompt in my life, but nevertheless, I learned how to use enough of the unix command shell to get my email via the text based reader PINE.
During my freshman year (1994) the only way to read email was to go to the computer lab. I had a laptop, but it wasn’t able to get my email cause there were no Wifi or Ethernet networks to use, and my school didn’t have dial-up accounts (matter of fact, my school used Token Ring networking). However, email was cool enough that I went to the lab all the time and did what anyone does with email when they first use it…. Send around jokes.
Fast forward a year and I discovered the magic of POP. POP stands for Post Office Protocol and it’s a way for an email client to connect to an email server and download your email to your laptop or desktop computer. The first time I used an email client (Claris Emailer) to connect to my university email account using POP I felt liberated. No more unix command line or tiny screen to read emails. I could have a rich experience composing, replying, copying, pasting and dragging messages to folders. How cool! Having been a Mac user it just seemed natural to use a GUI to manage my email.
Since then my appetite has grown beyond POP. I have lots of folders and use lots of computers to access my email, and frankly, I’ve been spoiled by my Microsoft Exchange account for years. However, we have realized that even though we provide rich synchronization of your email and folders with Outlook (via Outlook Connector) and Windows Live Mail lots of people still want and demand POP.
Well, it’s been a dirty little secret that Hotmail has always maintained a POP service for a small segment of customers. It’s always been very limited, and we didn’t want to encourage or offer it to more customers because we’ve always had ambitions for providing for a scalable and cost effective protocol (which POP is not in the world of huge inboxes). Well we now have this protocol, it’s called DeltaSync, and it’s something that Outlook and Windows Live Mail use. What we didn’t want to do is offer POP access and then have Outlook and Windows Live Mail customers use POP over DeltaSync. Now that we have free offline mail access we have focused our energies on offering users who use clients like Eudora, Thunderbird, and Apple Mail the ability to get their Hotmail in those clients. Additionally, most all mobile devices today support POP (including the Apple iPhone) and to date we haven’t been able to offer folks with a data plan a rich way to get their email unless they are using Windows Mobile (and even that is limited depending on carrier).
The story of POP continues like this… A few months ago some folks on the team hatched a plan to finally offer POP and starting this week Hotmail Plus users ($19.95 a year) will be able to use POP access from any device. In the interest of transparency though I want to be clear that we have plans to offer POP to all users (all premium and free) but we aren’t ready to do that yet. I can’t comment on a timeframe for when free users will get POP, but we hope to do so within the next 12 months.
If you do take advantage of this premium feature and sign up for Hotmail plus you’ll also get an ad-free experience, more storage, larger attachment support, and a non expiring account.
Our POP service requires that you use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) with the POP and SMTP connection and use SMTP authentication. This is to ensure that your email address and password are not subject to tampering. The settings are the following:
- POP: pop3.live.com (port 995)
- SMTP: smtp.live.com (port 25)
- Note: make sure you check the box that indicates that your outgoing server requires authentication (in most mail clients this is not checked by default).
- Username: your full email address
- Password: your Windows Live ID password
Well I hope this news is welcome, and thanks for being patient!
–Omar Shahine (Lead Program Manager, Hotmail)
PS – please note that I said Hotmail Plus users and not MSN Premium users. We are working to offer everyone POP access eventually, but for now, Hotmail Plus users are the only ones that can do so.
Got Any!!
Thank you for contacting Windows Live Hotmail Technical support regarding your issue. This is an automated response to help resolve your issue faster.
Our systems indicate that you are currently using MSN Hotmail. Are you aware of the new version of MSN Hotmail – "Windows Live Hotmail"? Many updates to the product were made based directly on customer feedback and resolve several of the customer issues that were seen in MSN Hotmail. It\’s possible this update can fix your issue.
I switched providers Verizon to Comcast and back to Verizon within 30 days. Tech Support at Verizon helped set me up back to VerzonVerizon Life. Most of my mails especially my sent mails at Hotmail and my verizon.net mails connected to my Hotmail server were mistakenly deleted. My favorite Bookmarks are also missing. I use to have MSN Premium. How could I recover all my missing mails and my Bookmarks. I have lots of valuable info in them. Please help if you could. Thank you.
GMail and AOL Mail offer IMAP for free and Hotmail doesn\’t have free POP yet!
Approximately 6 or 7 years ago, I remember in college Hotmail HAD POP for free!!! For quite a while at least. and then it stopped and now is charged? I was gutted when I lost that feature. Especially now that I wish to use it for iphone
is it possible to upgrade a normal windows live to a plus account keeping the add etc. without making a new account?
Someone raised this issue above – why doesnt POP work on a Mac; every time I follow the instructions and add my outgoing server, it tells me hat the system doesn\’t recognize the outgoing server smtp.live.com. What gives?

Do we have any timescales for the pop3 access to free hotmail accounts.. next year.. year after ?
Hi,Can anyone tell me how to access hotmail account from my own client. I am trying to access hotmail but cannot. If the service is only for paid customers then how can I access my free hotmail account from other sites such as netvibes.
I am a Hotmail Plus subscriber, but I can\’t log on to the smtp server.. (pop is ok)I don\’t know why
I am doing what I am told in your article.
Outlook said something is wrong with the authentication method.
what should I choose? none/TLS/SSL?
I followed your instructions for my outlook express and it\’s not working. Are those all the correct settings. I hope i didn\’t pay 20 bucks for nothing.
i am setting my account in my new mac and i dont know how to do it, could ypu plase explain to me syep by step. i had already hotmail plus account.catalina
I really like working with Hotmail.

Same deal. I can receive email but cannot send after paying $20. Email support has not helped
Hi, I got Homail working on my iPhone POP3 client. First, I signed up for the Live Hotmail Plus account here http://get.live.com/en/mailplus/features and cost $19.95 per year. I follow your instruction above and worked fine, thank you! BUT, it stopped working since Dec. 3rd, contacted Hotmail support but no response yet.

I have a question.I want to sign up for hotmail plus. In the regular hotmail accounts if i select a different e-mail address as a sender when I am sending email from hotmail, it shows from the behalf of my@mydifferentemail.com. I don\’t want hotmail to not show the word from the behalf of. Is it possible from hotmail plus??
hi I am try get text message for msn messenger contact from my pager +12402915827@tmomail.com thank you .
Are there any plans for free IMAP service from Windows Live Hotmail? It seems to be the trend that e-mail is taking nowadays. It would be really benefitial if a person\’s desktop mail client was always syncronized with it\’s respective web-based e-mail system.
I have the same problem. Everything was working fine with my Blackjack until few days ago: now can only receive mails but can\’t send any. Seems mobile smtp server not working. I tried with my Outlook, it works fie for both send and receive.
Thank you for killing access to my Hotmail messages. Hotmail has always had a problem sorting when the email total goes to high. That was not a problem as I could use Outlook Express to sort emails. Now I can\’t use Outlook Express. I have been searching all over the internet for help. One hour later, after sorting though dozens of Windows Live marketing pages, I found these instructions. This didn\’t help. I have 20 year of experience in testing computer software. I haven\’t been this angry in a while. Kevin
can u use it on the iphone?
Most people I know that have hotmail accounts are upgrading to smartphones and we all want to check our emails without using our browsers. Thanks Hotmail, you are just making people switch to yahoo, gmail etc.
¿por que pagar por lo que otros ofrecen gratis, ejemplo GMAIL? ¿Alguna justificación especifica?
En este caso utilizare mi cuenta POP con GMAIL, que ademas me permite redirecciones a las cuentas y dominios que desee.
I swithched over from MSN Premium Internet Software to Windows Live Hotmail Plus. I\’m able to connect to the POP3 server but I can\’t access the SMTP server. Is this a know issue with everyone? I\’m thinking of switching to a new email service and leaving Hotmail.
hotmail is the only "free" email to charge for pop access, gmail and all other email accounts will take over with such a stupid policy.
Took me a while to figure out the settings for snappermail on my Treo… But it works great…
hotmail sucks I can\’t connect to my iphone I guess I will be using yahool I am not paying 20 bucks. My friend did and it stopped working
Can receive but can not send email thu SMTP. Changed SSL settings according to the error message. No help. Really sucks.
microsoft sucks! never they can make something interconnectable!!!
Interesting…I set up my hotmail plus account on both my workstation (using Outlook 2007) and my iPAQ, and it works fine.
I am an Outlook Live customer which includes Hotmail Plus but I have been unable to make the settings shared above work with my iPhone. Ie. with SSL and the port numbers and my full hotmail address as the username. Are there any differences in the settings for Outlook Live users since it just doesn\’t work. I looked into izymail.com and that worked but I\’m not interested in paying both Microsoft and a 3rd party intermediary money to get free email on my iPhone.
Flashed my Cingular/New AT&T (wish it was the OLD AT&T!) HTC 8525 to the latest bios and Windows Mobile versions. Can\’t get Hotmail to work w.o. the browser. Clicking on the "try using the internet to setup my client" link doesn\’t work. The link does not appear to be complete (line break issue maybe), but when typed in it is re-directed to the Web Client. Is this because I haven\’t paid $20? Not looking to pay for something which was free and worked fine until a couple of days ago… especially since people are reporting it doesn\’t work after you pay for it, and "support" is non-existent.Is this considered an upgrade, or just another "undocumented feature"???
So I want to make sure I understand this. I\’ve been paying $20 a month
for MSN Premium for geez, 8 years now. And you offer this particular
service to Hotmail Plus customers, a program that – correct me if I\’m
mistaken – hasn\’t been around for half that long. Two questions: 1. Why
was Hotmail Plus chosen over MSN Premium (what\’s the difference between
the two programs?) and 2. If I\’m not using the MSN browser (Firefox),
then what exactly am I paying $20 a month for if GMail provides the
same storage space and additional functionality for FREE?
I\’m trying not to get angry, but I got an Iphone for Christmas, and I
just found out that MSN accounts aren\’t supported. You are the leading
technology company in the world, yet you can\’t offer POP to paying
customers that have been around for years, and you\’ve HAD this
functionality this whole time?
"A few months ago some folks on the team hatched a plan to finally offer POP and starting this week Hotmail Plus users ($19.95 a year) will be able to use POP access from any device."
A few months ago? I haven\’t been able to use Thunderbird for three
years because of this. This is crazy. Where is the innovation? Apple
and Google are doing it everyday. As a paying customer, I would
appreciate an update after the holidays regarding this POP matter.
Unfortunately, it may be too late. I\’ve already got a Gmail account.
Only a question: i\’d pay these 19.95 € only for pop access, but i read that it will be offered for free in one year.
If i don\’t renew the "Plus" subscription and its end, is the account closed or only re-downgraded with features that all the free accounts have?
hi I m ahmed please I need to have hotmail plus for my pop3 blackberry
Hotmail does not allow forwarding e-mails to a non-microsoft e-mail! I can forward my hotmail to another hotmail but i can not forward hotmail to gmail. Weird! So user friendly(!)
Can anybody post a link to a page where I am able to upgrade to Hotmail Plus to get POP3 access? I keep getting to this page (http://get.live.com/mail/options?cid=TXT_RETEN_HMWL_signinpg_allpgs_createacct ) but it has no mention of the $19.95 Plus service. Any help would be much appreciated.
it Works!
I upgraded hotmail to hotmail plus, setup the account on my iPhone and voila…
it picked up the port numbers automatically, now I\’m sending and recieving email perfectly.
Thank you folks, you advice was spot on.

Hi Alex, can you post a link to the page where you have the option to upgrade to Hotmail Plus? Many thanks, Craig.
My wife and I have been paying MSN Premium customers for years now and are sick of not being able to get our hotmail or msn mail on email clients or devices of our choice. I have purchased several Blackberry models and smartphones over the years only to return them because I could not access my email on them. What I should have done was change my email address rather than return the devices. We both gave each other iPhones for Christmas and discovered that hotmail or msn was NOT an option once again. There is simply no excuse to not offer POP3 access (especially to paying customers). Furthermore, why do they offer it to customers paying $20 per year and not those paying that much per month. I have been through many PDA\’s, phones, and smartphones over the years and the iPhone is simply the closest thing to a perfect device I have ever seen. Apple, Yahoo and Google continue to innovate and offer while Microsoft continues to follow a path similar to IBM. This time I\’m not returning the phones but rather saying goodbye to hotmail and MSN. We both signed up for Yahoo accounts since it was the best fit for the iPhone and could not be more pleased. Once we get all of our contacts to start using our new Yahoo accounts, Microsoft will be losing the $240 per year we have been paying for headaches.
I think it\’s ridiculous i\’m paying Verizon, linked with MSN, every month and i still can\’t get email on my iphone whereas yahoo and gmail both offer pop3 access for free. What is the point of even keeping the service?
For all those who paid for MSN Premium for "years", you can get angry at Microsoft all you want, but at the end you can only be angry at yourselves for not informing yourselves better. It\’s a free country and you did have choices, but instead you chose to make MS richer every month. Lack of knowledge often leads to the intimidation of stepping into something new, what\’s really shocking to me is how can hotmail survive with gmail around, try gmail for just an hour and you\’ll see what I\’m talking about.
Yeah I tried those phoney settings too. I guess they only work for Bill Gates on his own iPhone. I have had hotmail for many years and I have been a paying customer of Hotmail but I cannot get any of the email settings to work. On goes the childish battle between Apple and Microsoft. If Hotmail; doesn;t shape up soon then it looks like a Yahopo mail conversion is in order for me.
stupid paul, Gmail wasn\’t around back when hotmail wasn\’t owned by Microsoft. I have been a user of Hotmail since before MS owned them. So try shuttymail.
Just worked out how to get hotmail plus working correctly on the iphone!!!
Like most ppl here I could not get it (Hotmail Plus) going on my iPhone, however, Then suddenly it hit me.
I put the settings (above) into Outlook and it worked there. So I then just sync\’d the outlok account with the iphone using iTunes and.. aDaa!! it worked
Settings in outlook (copied from above)
SSL must be enabled.
POP: pop3.live.com (port 995)
SMTP: smtp.live.com (port 25)
Note: make sure you check the box that indicates that your outgoing server requires authentication (in most mail clients this is not checked by default).
Hotmail, you are losing costumers to the stupid fight with mac, not only gmail and other email provides cost free to use on the iphone, THEY ARE FASTER AND MORE COMPATIBLE, scroll thorough the comments and you will see 90+ % unsatisified customers!!!
just throw your apple garbage in the big and buy a microsoft based phone!!!
How do you even get a Hotmail Plus account? I just keep going around in circles to find it.I\’ve found the "Windows Live Hotmail Plus" features page (http://get.live.com/mailplus/features). But once I click on the "Get it now" BTN, it sends me to the main "Get Windows Live" page. I then click on the "Get Windows Live" BTN, and then takes me to a page to download the Windows Live App.I don\’t want the App., just the account. I\’ve even tried setting up a new Hotmail account. I seem to remember "Hotmail Plus" being an option when I signed my dad up a while back. Didn\’t see it this time.I\’ve looked all over my vanilla Hotmail account for an upgrade. All I\’ve found is the upgrade to there new GUI.Are they not offering the "Hotmail Plus" accounts anymore? What\’s the deal?
Unfortunately……..LiveMail for me is absolutely lousy……it won\’t show animations, it\’s slow, it doesn\’t have the flexibility or options that hotmail had, it\’s butt-ugly and so full of bugs I need a flyswatter most times I use it. Can anybody tell me how to get the old hotmail back? I\’d be grateful. Thanks
Yahoo offers free "push" email to iPhone and iPod Touch users… Gmail offers free POP and IMAP… where\’s Windows Live Hotmail? They have a $20/year "feature" now, while their competitors have been offering free versions for a while now.
I\’m very disapointed I cannot unilize my hotmail account on my IPhone. I\’ve been a hotmail user since 2001…I\’m opening a gmail account for now. Don\’t want to have to do this. But, I must have my e-mails. If anyone has a better alternative or solution, Please contact. Thanks
I just got an ipod touch, so looks like i will be changing to gmail after 5 years with hotmail!
Thoroughly annoyed, I have an iPod Touch as well, and would like to utilize the new mail applications Apple has come out with, and cannot use it at all. If I use Safari as well, I cannot log into my Hotmail account without getting a revolving door with the login screen. So…this may be the last twenty bucks Microsoft will get from me for Hotmail…Too bad you and Apple cannot get along, because I happen to like Hotmail, but want to use it on my Mac, iPod and iPhone. Guess I am gonna start a Yahoo account

I\’ve never really looked outside hotmail for my email until i got the ipod touch. Most large corporations are greedy, but Microsoft takes the cake. I\’m forced to switch from hotmail to some other email account (gmail, yahoo). Its things like that make me want to switch to apple software, just because i hate supporting this kind of ignorance. Hotmail believes that because its so inconvenient to switch emails, nobody will do it. Well i disagree, i think people will realize that other email servers like gmail or yahoo are willing to offer better service and more options…this is bullshit, its just like when i bought Vista Ultimate and didn\’t get any "extras" like promised. Its not that it was a huge deal, i just hate putting money into below mediocre service
well, after using hotmail since 10/96 (and paying for upgrades during most of that time), i finally made the switch to gmail. now, i can\’t believe i waited so long. gmail is sooo incredibly better than hotmail … IMAP access, multi-tagging, sophisticated filtering, and the best part is using google search to find my old emails. their search is so good, i barely need to sort my email anymore. i used to have outlook clogging up my system all of the time, now i only use it for MS exchange accounts and scheduling. when google calendar syncs w/ my smartphone, i\’ll use outlook even less. no offense to the hotmail team, but you are light years behind and you may as well just start over at this point.
I can get it to work (Outlook & iPhone) – but it only seems to support the Live Hotmail \’Inbox\’
how can I see all my other folders in my account…?
or is that another reason why we need to switch to yahoo/google..?
I jot an ipod touch. To my surprise hotmail does not support POP3.I read all of the complaints on the site and i would like to share my solution to this problem.1) Create a new email account with any of the competitors that will support POP3 (I Used Gmail)2) forward all of your hotmail emails to the new account (Hotmail supports this by going to the options on the right hand side of the menu)3) setup the Iphone/Ipod touch mail to communicate with the new email account.4) Enjoy.
I liked the last suggestion, however, Hotmail does not allow forwarding e-mail to other domains outside of Hotmail or MSN. This is the way they can rope you into sticking with them. How unfortunate that I cannot access my e-mail on my iPod touch! Any other suggestions?
Thanks!
How on earth are you supposed to upgrade to hotmail plus?
I cannot find anyway of doing please help.
Es posible que en el futuro el servicio de correo electronico en pop3 sea liberado a los usuarios con cuentas gratuitas te hotmail de no ser asi para cambiar nuestro servido de correo
It is simple: I will continue to use Gmail until a POP3 feature is added and maintain this account as a throw-away-to-use-for-signups-and-catching-spam account. There is no valid reason other than wanting to maintain control that this has not been offered yet. I need to archive and backup ALL my email and attachments, and I need the freedom to use whatever email client I want.
It is amazing how Microsoft Corp takes bright young people from top academic campuses, letting them drink the Redmond WA kool-aid that turns them into total morons, eg – posting how amazing they have made their business service by adding POP functionality ….. 8 years into the 21st century.
Not to disagree with you all, but Yahoo pop isn\’t free either. Only Gmail.

Good news. Will Hotmail be offering IMAP anytime soon?

Wow. I just got a new Mac. This is the reason. Microsoft doesn\’t play nice. I think it\’s pretty obvious that hotmail will lose customers if they continue to neglect POP or IMAP uses. you simply can\’t charge money for something a competitor offers for free.
I use both Gmail and Windows live hotmail plus. I do have to say that i will be paying next year for mail plus because of the removal of the ads and larger mailbox. POP is the main reason i paid for it at first. I am VERY happy with the POP access and look forward to the day i dont have to pay them for it.
I have not been able to access my Hotmail Plus account through pop. I have studied the settings on this page and others (the same information is restated on the apple discussions page). I configured my pop client for pop3.live.com port 995 and smtp.live.com port 25. SSL enabled (Agendus gave me the choice of alternate port or STARTLS under SSL settings – I tried both). Login required for outgoing. Full email addy as login name. I tried more than one client. I also found a page where a user copied in his email thread with MS Support in which the rep explained that they have discontinued pop access for Hotmail Plus accounts.I don\’t know what the real story is…..
H, I am having the same problem with only being able to view my inbox
Forwarding from hotmail requires that you have an ms offered extension to forward email. using the method listed above will get you the message below. Anyway not a good stradegy MS, I am moving to GMail, thanks for the free ride while it lasted though. MSG:You can forward your mail to one other e-mail address that ends in hotmail.com, msn.com, live.com, or custom domains. You\’ll receive an e-mail at that address asking you to verify your account.
Let\’s see…I can pay $20 a year for hotmail plus and get pop3…BUT I can only sync my contact list in Outlook. If I want to sync my calendar, I have to go get an MSN premium account for $10 bucks a month and then…OH WAIT, now I lose pop3 access! Microsoft just can\’t get their act together with anything. There are other devices in the world besides Microsoft products and if they won\’t play nice with anyone else, then people will continue to go elsewhere. As for me, I will stick with Gmail. They give me everything I want, and I don\’t have to pay for it. With Hotmail, I can\’t even pay to get what I want.
Just setup new iPhone, and everything synched find with Hotmail Plus account. once I setup everything exactly as described in the note from Omar Shahine.
I\’m having a problem where I can receive email, but I cannot send email when I set up iPod Touch with Hotmail POP access as per the instruction above. Receiving is fine, but when attempting to send, I\’m returned with a "cannot connect to outgoing mail server" error message. I double checked the outgoing settings, port 25, SSL, etc, etc, and everything is fine. Any ideas? Also, how can I view my other folders on my iPod touch?

Hi If you are having issues sending email with these settings try changing the SMTP port number to 587. If that will not work you need to find out if your ISP is doing what they call port blocking. Port Blocking is used to stop SPAM mail from being sent. You might need to change your out going SMTP server to that of your ISP. This is standard practice for all mail setup not just hotmail.I also have an iPhone. It works most of the time with POP, but sometimes the hotmail SMTP will take a dump and stop working. Remember this is basically beta so if it\’s not working … Tough &*^$!
By following the initial post directions, my iTouch loads the hotmail emails from the by ascending date to the most recent (rather than the most recent to the latest). In other words, if I have 200 emails in my Inbox from 2007, the 2008 email will never get loaded.
Any suggestions on how to fix this? other than cleaning out my hotmail Inbox
If your considering to start paying 20$ for your email with hotmail. you can get 5 personalized email addresses (+400 aliases) for as low as 99ct. US per month. yourname@yourdomain.com!! these accounts are compatible with ipod touch and iphone and just as convenient as a hotmail account. Look at 1&1 Online Services USA!!
I\’ve just copied the instructions and all works fine with my newly upgraded Hotmail plus account on my new 16gb iphone but i too have found that the emails start with my oldest emails from 2004. How can i sort this out?
In Outlook 2007, you must also go to the Advanced tab and select the checkbox "This server requires an encrypted connection" for Incoming Server and select "Auto" (SSL/TLS) as the "Use the following type of encrypted connection" for the Outgoing Server.
Now, all my hotmail comes to my standard inbox and I can run Rules & Alerts, set Follow-Up flags and all the other stuff I could never do to anything in my Hotmail Inbox while connecting as an HTTP e-mail account!!!
How can I set to download the most recent emails to my mobile phone?
I have 4k+ emails in my hotmail account and every time when I try to download the oldest mails come but I dont want to get those old mails, instead, I want the latest mails. How can I do it?
Well, it\’s 6 months now. What\’s the status on this for free users?
"As of June 30, 2008, Microsoft is disabling the DAV protocol and you will no longer be able to access your Hotmail Inbox via Outlook Express…"

So much for free POP3 access for OE users.
"…we have plans to offer POP to all users (all premium and free) but we aren\’t ready to do that yet. I can\’t comment on a timeframe for when free users will get POP, but we hope to do so within the next 12 months" (Original post September 21, 2007)

My Response: Now seven months since this announcement; five more months will comprise 12 months. Any idea when Microsoft plans on coming through on their promise to offer free POP to all users (free and premium)?
I could not access hotmail plus from yahoo mail plus. Any idea?
Thanks in advance.

Hmmm… tried Shahine\’s instructions…. Host is contacted, login sent… but Thunderbird displays an \’Alert\’ that "pop3.live.com responded: mailbox …. is not available."
And SMTP fails for me too.
All my other methods of access to my Hotmail account work… WinLiveMail, web, MailWasherPro, etc.
Is this (still?) ready for prime time??? or on \’hiatus\’??
Hello! I\’ve been trying to set up my Pocket PC HP iPAQ 6515 to send and receive Hotmail but I can only receive: when I try to send an email, I\’m getting an error message saying my settings are not correct or I am not connected. What am I doing wrong? I\’m a Hotmail Plus subscriber and my account is @hotmail.com: are my pop and smtp ending .live.com? And where do I set the ports in my iPAQ? Thanks. Regards, Steffo
thank you!
This post is quite old (Sept 21, 2007) and there has been no update as to when POP will be available for all Hotmail accounts. Please let us know. Thank you. Rgds, loriawi AT live DOT com
Windows live mail is now the standard program for hotmail. Unfortunately, you pay the normal price of Microshaft holding your hand to protect you from those horrible people who send nasty things in your mail.
Attachment links are missing so you can\’t save an attachment unless you log in to hotmail. Some links are disabled if M$ thinks it might be a phishing attempt so you can\’t go to any of your friends sites if they send you links. Typically, no documentation exists to tell you how to disable these features so, you have to start searching for settings. Half the time, these settings are not in live mail at all, but part of the OS itself.
OMG please save me from this M$ hand holding. I am a computer programmer and engineer, I have been on the internet for as many years as the internet has existed in the UK so I am quite aware of the scams and tricks sent in emails. I don\’t need microshit to hold my hand, I\’m a big boy now. This practice has to stop, macroshite windoze is fast becoming a program that dictates what you can and can\’t do or see on your own PC.
I really need to get this opened up to non-paying customers soon, because I can\’t stand the new Hotmail interface. Since yesterday it\’s been a complete nightmare, with pages that keep reloading themselves recursively, a newfound inability to open emails in their own window, and all around buggyness. I really need the ability to forward all my Hotmail messages to by Yahoo or GMail accounts where I can actually read them in peace, ASAP.
So, I have set up my iPod Touch with these parameters, and it whirs and spins and NOTHING happens — no errors, no nothing.
What do I have to do to get access to POP3/SMTP services?
I have tried this in Thunderbird and it does seem to connect to hotmail but then rejects the password to my email account.
Any ideas on how to overcome this problem?
I was setup to receive hotmail to my iphone till recently without problems. after the new upgrade to 3G it stopped working. I set hotmail through the POP3 live and it worked for a few days thn stopped receving or sending new emails in the iphone. What happened?
Any idea why Hotmail won\’t work on a Motorola Q9c mobile 6 phone? I\’ve tried everything and have had to resort to having my hotmail forwarded to a Gmail IMAP account on my phone. Works great but how stupid it that that Hotmail won\’t work with Windows Mobile 6 on a Smartphone!!!??? Very frustrated and I guess I\’ll have to either switch over to Gmail permanently or use a Blackberry Curve phone since that works with Hotmail! Common Microsoft if you want us to use Hotmail make it work on a mobile phone.
