We’ve had some reports on the blog, and our QA team has confirmed that having the Firefox Adblock add-on enabled for the Hotmail site can make it impossible to compose or reply to a message in the full version. This does not affect Internet Explorer users or Firefox users who do not have the Adblock add-on. Depending on which Adblock filters you’ve created, you may or may not be affected.
The Hotmail team does cross-browser testing, including full Firefox testing – it’s important to us that you can get to your e-mail from anywhere. Unfortunately, it’s not possible to test every browser add-on, so sometimes things break, and thanks for your prompt reports of this problem!
While we do not condone suppression of advertising in our product (advertising does fund our product) we realize that users who have enabled this add-on may not understand why Hotmail stopped working.
We’re working how to mitigate this problem in a future release. In the meantime, if you’re having problems composing or replying in Firefox, you have two options:
- Disable Adblock for Hotmail. You could also try tweaking your filters, but the foolproof method is to go to Tools –> Adblock –> and select “Whitelist this whole site.”
- Switch to the classic version. This means clicking the “Switch to classic” link that you see in the lower left corner.

Correct, the same problem was discussed few days back at one of the forums, http://www.merawindows.com/Forums/tabid/324/forumid/38/threadid/12742/scope/posts/Default.aspx
and I had posted the same solution of adblocker should be disabled.
I was hoping this might be the reason for a new issue on my system, but when I open my add ons list, there is no Add block, in fact there are few add ons of any kind. Both IE and Firefox recently have been allowing pop up screens to "pop up" then makes them disappear instantly. It\’s driving me nuts. Even if I turn off my pop up blockers on both browsers, the windows still zip out of existence. So I\’ve been going around and around in my Lavasoft Personal Firewall, trying to find out if it\’s the culprit, since Lavasoft has little tolerance for ads of any kind. No luck so far. My XP Media Center firewall is disabled. This is going to take me some time and hair-tearing, I can tell. Oh, well.
Hi.This
is an issue that not only affects Windows Live Hotmail but all Windows Live sites that use the newest "Windows Live
button" (top left of every screen). The issue is specifically about the sub-menus of the Windows Live button menu.Whenever
you pass the mouse over a sub-menu, the sub-menu will keep flickering.
For example, you click the Windows Live button, then go to Windows Live
services, which opens a sub-menu that has Home, Contacts, Calendar,
etc. As you pass the mouse over Home, Contacts, Calendar, and so on,
the sub-menu will keep flickering. And not just a little, it flickers A
LOT. Just keeps disappearing and re-appearing extremely quickly. This
is in Firefox, SeaMonkey, Camino (or any other Gecko browser) on Mac OS
X. So as you can imagine, this affects quite a lot of users. Here is a video showing the bug.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8U1arbxfbsI
know the Hotmail team probably has nothing to do with the Windows Live
button, but still, this does affect Hotmail as well as all other
Windows Live sites (since they will all eventually use the new button).
I hope this issue will be forwarded to the right people, and this issue
will be fixed soon. Thanks a lot for your time!
Does this problem only happen with Adblock, or does it also happen with Adblock Plus?

Speaking of Adverts… here is an idea :
Based on the screen resolution ,choose the best orientation for the Ad\’s to be dispayed.
ie: if its widescreen : then display a vertical column advert
if its the 4:3 screen: then retain ur current horizontal top advert setup..
this would be nice, imho.
Team za!
Ed: I haven\’t tried Adblock Plus, but I think the same issue would occur, depending on which filters you have created.
L Dean James: I don\’t know if Adblock has anything to do with pop-up windows. I think it\’s probably related to pop-up blockers. Your browser has a pop-up blocker, and any toolbars you have installed may also have pop-up blockers. Is there a problem in Hotmail for you?
Sriram: Thanks for the feedback. I responded to you personally.
please help… i signed up for a windows live account. I now can\’t access any of my old hotmail – i am getting married in 3 weks and ALL of my wedding stuff is in here. Please show me how to turn off my live account and get back to my classic hotmail i have had since 1998. It lets me sign in and i can see my inbox and folders but it won\’t let me open them. HELP!!!
help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I cannot get into my e-mail box, and apparently have lost my firewall, anivirus, etc. I don\’t know what to do
Firefox and Windows Live HotmailLook guys and gals you must make it work without workarounds with Firefox. When I attempted to log into my WLM account this morning it was a disaster. I for one have no intentions of disabling Adblock PLUS just to use the WLM service. Simply not worth the hassels.Paul
good job:windows live hotmail,i sign up for window live account, all of my old mail was in my new inbox.I access my new inbox,
by typing msn.com in my adress bar.to the right of welcom:I find my new mail box.peace, one love
Ed: I use Mozilla Firefox and the Adblock Plus extension and yes the problem does happen with Adblock Plus
I need to know how I can switch back to the classical version!! please someone help me
I\’m stuck in LIVE Hotmail HELL!!! I want my old hotmail back please!!!!
How do I do this???????????????
Someone????????????
Ok,
For some reason, I accidentally went over to Windows live mail. And I HATE IT…Its very slow. And both versions of live are.
I want to go back to my MSN hotmail, I am also paying for it too with MSN plus.
Please, I tried going into Options but theres no button that says \’Opt-out\’ or somthing.
Please can it be possible to switch mine back to the old one? Please…
This one is too slow.
Thanks. Please reply through my e-mail at cjbaz@hotmail.com
Thank you,
Cj
You can\’t switch back to the old hotmail. MS decided that you don\’t need it. http://mailcall.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!CC9301187A51FE33!29123.entry
There are a few javascripts that are often blocked by AdBlock… once I whitelisted dap.js things worked fine. The reason it was blocked in my filter is that the file is hosted on the ads site instead of mail.live.com.
Does anyone know how to get rid of the "Today" page – yes, I have saved it in the settings to go directly to Inbox, but it doesn\’t.
Why would I disable my AD blocker just to use a service that I was FORCED to use?Microsoft\’s ad revenue is a Microsoft problem, not mine. I won\’t disable my ad blocker just to use your POS live service that I never asked for in the first place. Gmail has no problems and doesn\’t require me to change anything. Come to think of it, they offer more of everything. Including service.
Using the new hotmail is a truly horrible experience, in so many fundamental ways. Virtually everyone I know who currently has a hotmail account – and that\’s a huge number of people – is in the process of setting up gmail and yahoo mail accounts. Amazing that in 2007 this new \’windows live\’ disaster could be released by any software company, let alone Microsoft…! Wow. Too bad, hotmail was great the way it was. I guess nothing good lasts…
I\’ve used Firefox 2.0 to access my Windows Live Hotmail (Full Version) for some time, even with adblock enabled. Now suddenly today it\’s forcing me to use the old, classic interface. What gives? I never had a problem with Firefox before. The explanation says that the classic version is "better for my browser", yet it claims that the full version is compatible with Firefox 1.5! Could MS have really screwed things up so much that it works on 1.5 and not 2.0? Or do they really expect us to switch to IE because of this? (IE is not even available for my platform) I hope this issue gets fixed soon!
Change the subscription to one of the other ones in the options menu for adblock and it works fine
Suddenly I found Windows Live on my computer. With Mozilla Firefox, the "from" column is too narrow. With Firefox, Internet Explorer and Maxthon, the width of the folders and messages varies for no reason. Worst of all, Microsoft deleted my quicknames! I used those to organize my contacts. It\’s a horror story! Is Microsoft trying to close down hotmail and msn? If not, what on earth are they up to. Carol
Wow – windows live continues to be massively broken with Firefox. GMail is working fine these days, and I\’m only using Hotmail!Lame! as my spam-catcher. Even getting to put input into this box requires some specific tricks. Sayonara hotlame!
What a nightmare hotmail has become, it used to be the best, I hope it dies a rapid death, I think everybody should boycott it!
i, myself, am presently in the process of moving all my contacts and all my messages from a ten-year-old
hotmail account to gmail. i wish hotmail would stop all these
"upgrades"…. less is more!!
Firefox Users:- Download and install https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/59 Using the switch user agent addon, configure firefox to falsely report Internet Explorer is being used. You will see many problems of Windows Live Hotmail like "from column" width being too narrow disappear
